Sanford and Son,
Re-Check everything! It still sounds like something simple. Distributor cap? Condensor? Rotor? (I had a new rotor bought last year that fit very 'sloppily.' Replaced it with a 'used' old one that fit snuggly ... and voor--roomm. Problem solved). Good luck. You've got a dozen 'Monday-morning-Packard-mechanics' curiously guessing. DanL

The next time your Chevy buddy comments on your car ask him about the Chevy's 90lb oil pan. See what he says. Then, since he's confused to the point of locking up like in the "KGB" commercials on TV these days, tell him that they weigh that much because they have the habit of puking the crank, rods, and pistons out the bottom, along with the oil pan. Seen it done, on a truck just driving down the road at 55mph, no joke. I will NEVER own a Chevrolet powered vehicle. You want your car to run fast, put in a Chevy. You want it to run smooth and quiet, put in a MOPAR engine. You want to do both, put in a Packard engine! LOL!
You want to work on it? Put in a Ford! If you decide to hot rod it, I'd put in a 374 Packard V8 and a manual trans in it, and wouldn't look back. You'd have plenty of power, it'd still be all Packard, and would definitely be different at car shows. Oh, and redo the interior in old man mohair, it's nice and snuggly warm in the winter!

will change points tommarrow, chek compression and spark plug fire. Good Idea. I would suggest you use a new set. Don't forget to change the capacitor as well. This really sounds like a distributer problem to me. Don't jump to a worn timing chain as being the problem. Of corse if it has jumped timimg because of worn gears that's another story. Put a timing light on it. you will be able to tell right away if that has happened.
