The same points were used for all Delco distributors in Packards from 1947 to 1956. The original Delco number is 1918148 an these were also used for 1949 to 1955 Cadillac and 1940 to 1955 Oldsmobile and Pontiac 8 cylinder cars.

Scottie, having been a auto parts guy for 9 years, I have heard quite a few comebacks from customers when we didn't have the part they needed. My favorite one to this day is "This'd be a good place to build a parts store."
The next time they don't have what you're looking for tell 'em that, pisses 'em off every time, trust me.

HIlarious! Trust Turbopackman to have the right answer for anything packard, including a snappy comeback!
I have a 327 distributor in my 50 288 and i put the pertronix setup in it, runs super smooth. it's still 6 volt positive ground, but they make one for neg ground and 12 v too. I never miss an opportunity to recommend it. Looks stock and get rid of those annoying points and condenser!

Last time i checked Petronix did not offer a unit for the 53/54 Packards with Delco distributors. Only the Autolite ones. Something about now enough space in the distro body for their pickup unit. If this has changed, then I am all ears.

Pertronix is not needed, just do the Ford TFI HEI conversion and mount it in a hidden place in good air flow. You can use your stock distributor, no matter if it's Delco or Autolite. The advantage here is that you can go back to stock at anytime, and even disable it and go back to points in a "limp home mode". It's really the best of both worlds, and better than my original HEI conversion, IMHO. Only for 12v though, that's the only downside.

Does the ford unit trigger on the points opening or closing?

I'll have to agree with T'Packman, the Ford TFI conversion is the way to go for 12v systems. I'll give it a try as soon as i can pick up a module.

My Chryco parts book lists the same points for all Packards from 1953 to 1958, straight eight or V8. Including 55-56 DR equipped and 57 58 Studebaker engine. There is one exception. No points listed for 55-56 AL equipped
Same points were used by Olds 37-55 6 or 8, 56 Nash 6 or 8,Buick 37-53, Pontiac 6 or 8 37-56,Rambler 57-59 8, Studebaker 6 50-52, Studebaker 8 53-55,56-59 and 61 DR equipped, Willys (Jeep) 59-60 4 or 6 DR equipped. Chryco part # 2067 045 regular, 2067 048 heavy duty. Delco Remy # 1871870 reg, 1938330 HD There is a cross reference for 11 other makers part number including Echlin, Niehoff, Standard, Delco Remy etc but I will not bother copying them out as this is a 1964 book and the numbers are probably obsolete by now. But if you want any particular number just ask.
