I was wondering about this seal too. My 2301 does not have any mounting holes in the groove in the top of the firewall. I would like to find out what was original.

Clipper47, does your car have a cowl seal like mine? If so, is it fastened with sheet metal screws?

I think the seal on my '50 is glued on.

Boy that started something eh ?
Lots of interest there but not anyone who like me has no holes or a seal - when I got the car it did not have any signs of ever having a seal in that location, but to be fair it had been restored around 1968ish so it could have been "lost" at that stage My car is very early February of 1948. I have the groove, but no seal or holes for screws on my 48. The car had been repainted a couple times but I see no evidence of holes filled or welded up.

All the '48s that I've seen have never had the seal, so it may be a 23rd series part and not used on the 22nd series.

All 2nd and 23rd series cars had the seal. It was glued in place. t was not in the groove it was between that an the finished cowl edge. In fact during the 22nd series production the placement and length of the seal was modified. It was lengthened and placed over the regulator to help keep the water off of it and shorting it out. I can get the exact shape and length if you need it.

According to the 41-47 and 48-54 Parts Books. Both the 22nd and 23rd series had Hood (Bonnet) to Cowl Weatherstripping. Sometimes the answers are right there in Black and White.
