What a great resource this Website is. Last week I attempted to pull the rear brake drums on the '39.
I met with no success. A search or the Packadinfo site gave answers on what and how to do it.

First let me address safety issues. MANY MANY thanks to BigKiv, Rusty O'Tool, and Bob1951 for saying "Do not stand in line with the axle as the drum and puller can rocket across the shop floor when it finally decides to give up and come loose" It did just that and having read and obeyed the warning my shins are intact. Next time I will listen to Bob1951 and leave the hub nut on loosely to keep the drum from rocketing across the shop floor.

The industrial strength puller BigKiv recommended from ToolTopiatooltopia.com/ did the trick. Without that tool and your advise I would still be at it.
A little heat, a 2 pound sledge and a total lack of timidness did the trick.

Glad you were able to get the drum off. The sound they usually make when the drum finally lets go sounds like a shotgun going off.

I bet the second drum seamed easier as you knew what to expect.

Yup, that's what it takes on 55 and earlier rear drums! What a PITA. No wonder that Packard switched to the Ford-style (Dana) for 1956.

One comment: from your picture, I would think you would be heating up the outside, not the inside of the taperfit shaft.

We are heating the outside of the hub. The hub extends say an inch and a half from the rivets. The joint is at the key way. Here is a picture with the drum removed and you can get a better visual of the connection.

Just found this pullers which is sold in the UK, does it look the same as the one used here. it costs about ?45, I have seen ones like it for $150. Possibly a cheap copy?

I bought one of those $45 pullers off Ebay - worked fine on my 38. I suppose for heavy shop use it might not last but for the number of times I'll use it I imagine it will last my lifetime.

That looks just like the one I've been using. The only problem with it is the handle metal is a bit soft. Now I only tap the handle until tight and hit the drum instead. It's a little slower that way.
