Valve Order

I tried looking through the service manual and didnt see it listed, but does anyone know the valve order on the 288/327/359 motors?
Something in this format would be great as that would be that it looks like when the engine is viewed from the side: -8- -7- -6- .... I E E I I E .... Hoping to do a cold valve adjustment tomorrow. Does Intake .009, Exhaust .013 sound correct for a cold adjustment? (Normally set .007, .010 hot)

Kev,
Think a chart would look something like this, well at least it would for a 282 but I'd think 288/327/359 would be the same. On a 282 each exhaust port is separate but the inlet's are siamesed between 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8. 8 - 7 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 E I I E E I I E E I I E E I I E Used 0.009" and 0.012" cold on the '41's engine when it was rebuilt.

Look at attached pic of my 1948 288. Note that in nearly all cases of Flat head engines the spark plugs set closest to EXH. valve.
So from Rear of engine to front of engine: 8---76---54---32---1 E I EE I EE I EE I E EACH cylinder has has only ONE exhaust port. But each cylinder SHARES an INTake port with one other cylinder.

Setting valve lash (correctly and accurately) on an engine while it is running requires almost daily or at least monthly practice.
My recommendation is to get the engine warmed to full operating temperature. THEN set the valves to book spec. (if book spec is generaly accepted as correct). Err on the loose side when in doubt. THEN start the engine and check your work while it's running.

Use OZstatesmans' chart for each individual tappet. It is correct.

BigKev,
One method for adjusting these cold, courtesy of another. Good luck if you tackle these hot, and running. The last time I did this on a ninth series, hot, running and .004 for exh and int it took me two hours. I'd like to know how they did it at the factory. Regards, Dave

"I'd like to know how they did it at the factory"
Most likely just set them cold and probably not to accurately either. NOTE: that a valve adjustment is usualy part of the 1000 mile service check up with nearly all manufactuteres. Or new car prep procedures at the dealer. Or to put it another way: The factory left it up to the dealers to set them right.
