Brrrrrrr. It's been cool at times here (for us), but anything that low is downright depressing. At least your Packard had the good sense to stay inside.

Just plug in the block heater and put a lightbulb under the oil pan.
Worked every time for me on cold weather.

Certainly SAE15W-40 is too heavy for those temperatures, check y0ur owners manual for a proper recommendation, probably straight SAE10W. Your dipstick is a straight line right into the oil pan, so an alternative to a block heater is a dipstick heater. Don't know how easy they are to find nowadays, they used to be common items in auto parts and accessory stores.

Dave, did you notice that the F and C temperature readings -35 deg. are the same? A convergence of scales. Whatever scale you use to measure temperature, this is just too cold. Take care and stay warm.

Temperature actually went to -37C (a record low)before warming to -35. Thanks to some southern wind today we are having a balmy -10 today albeit with an additional 12" of snow. Stay warm!

....before warming to -35
I would hope you only have the rarest of occasion to use that remark! And I thought it was cold here in northern New Jersey, last night, we had -1 Fahrenheit, before warming to about 20 F. I'm heading down to the Caribbean for a few weeks, want to come along?
