In my 14 collector car fleet is a 1950 23rd Series deluxe touring sedan. I like this Packard "streamliner" because it drives nicely on the freeway, it is very comfortable, and when I go to shows it draws a great deal of attention. The younger generation have never even seen a straight eight and are fascinated by it. Also I can understand and fix almost anything on the car.

I have never considered updating it for more power with a later engine. That would put it in the same class as 90% of the cars at the shows. I would have just another street rod. The extra performance would show how limiting the drum brakes, narrow tires, slow steering, and soft suspension really are. After updating all those items for handling and safety to be consistent with the power I would have a very expensive modified car that looks like an old car. That is not very interesting to me and costs way too much.

When I want to go fast on a long trip and not think about the car I take one of my 3 modern cars. They operate great but are not any fun. When they wear out they are not worth saving.

If I were in your position I would spend the money on totally overhauling the stock Packard drive train so it would be reliable, and then enjoy it for the next couple decades.
