This thread is to answer a PM, related to the ZIS headlights.

Sealed beam in Russian is "Лампа-фара", a system* that consists of the reflector, the glass lens array on the front and the bulb, taken together to one unit. In the event of damage it has to be completely replaced.

Howard (HH56) provided a suitable pic, see item 4.13025.


*Acc. to wikipedia: "...introduced in the United States in 1940 and became mandatory from the following year until the 1984 model year..."

The original ZIS part number is 308096-П.

Today all shapes and sizes of the sealed-beam system are available in Russia. To get the finest quality money can buy check Kanter Auto Products.

When I restored my 1941 convertible sedan I looked high and low for a 6v sealed beam healight without the 3 alignment pins. Alignment pins became a federal mandate in the early 50's. So the CCCA would deduct points for not being "period correct." So I bought some tabbed headlight from Bob Drake, took them to a glass shop where they first ground off the tabs then polished the lens to clear. Lights were $15 each and polishing was $15 each

Shortly thereafter Bob Drake began offering sealed beams without tabs for $15. I now see he gets $25 for them now.

Roger, thanks, good point. BTW have you restored your car by own hands?
And when the talk is of CCCP cars, then it shouldn't be forgotten to use correct lenses. Otherwise the ZIS police would deduct points for not being "political correct".

No, this "post" isn't the real big thing. As always, it is a part of the puzzle. What we see is a combination of the ZIS-101 (the forerunner of the 110, which is the brother of the one-eighty), furnished with the face (the radiator mask, the bumper and a couple of chromed parts) of a ZIS-110 and homemade twin-eyes.
But why do we see this pic, when it won't be helpful?
Well, as far as I understand, all you have are some few pictures and some few theories. And all I can deliver are a couple of facts behind the scene. It is up to you to sort it out.

I'm guessing the pic titled "cosmetic surgery.jpg" was taken about 1980 +/- 5 years. Possibly the single dual element sealed beams were difficult/expensive to obtain in Russia by that time so the owner of the car decided to 'upgade' to dual headlites.

Is that car four wheel drive???? i'm not able to determine approximate year of pic on that one.

Maybe car was done earlier and the 4 is better mantra was in full swing over there as well. Remember the late 50's into 60's here when they tried to fit in 4 headlights no matter how they looked? Bug eyed Studebakers, canted Lincolns, a RR model where they looked as much squeezed in and out of place as the ZIS does.

Keith, not bad, the film "Manya, act!" was shot in 1991. The car had a minor role.

No, I don't believe that. Why do you think so? The axle extensions of the 4WD's are long (see below). One need special hubcaps to hide them. The picture above was taken in 1970.
