Carter WA-1 low speed jet

Hello all. First of all, I'm afraid this will be a bit of a rant.

I'm in the process of rebuilding a Carter WA-1 (tag 477-S) that I got from the Flackmaster. During the rebuild process, the low speed jet stripped out, and I had to drill it out to extract it.

I bought a rebuild from Kanter. It doesn't have the jet. At the advice of 51Packard, I called Daytona Parts. They didn't have a jet. I tried Kanter, but they didn't have any. They recommended The Carburetor Shop in Eldon, MO. [Here is were the rant begins] The carb shop has a policy of selling nothing less than a carb kit, but they have the jet in stock. Fairly incredulous, I tried to talk the guy on the phone into selling me the jet (jet plus shipping is $50!) but he instead gave me a lecture on how his kit is better and mine was probably made in China. (It wasn't). Finally, I relented, and said that I would just order the kit and the jet and deal with it. His kit actually had the meter rods and accelerator pump spring, which mine does not. He then stated that he didn't think he wanted to sell me anything, and HUNG UP on me. Insert multiple curse words here.

Bottom line. Does anyone have a low speed jet they can sell me?

If not, I can try calling the carb shop again next week, maybe he'll have forgot that he didn't feel like selling me a jet and a carb kit. Kanter already said they would take back the kit I bought, since I haven't used any of the parts.

Any other ideas?

I have a jar of old jets I've saved from various carbs. Send me the dimensions of yours, plus a picture and the number engraved or stamped on it, and I'll take a look.

Jets are not considered a "wear item" and thus wouldn't ordinarily be included in a carburetor kit.

That would do it! Thanks for the tip. I found that on google last night, but bypassed it because it's a NOS kit and I already had a kit. I had forgotten about it since then in the flurry of today.

Owen, the attached picture is what my jet looks like. If you have one, I'd gladly buy it from you.

Ken

From your picture it looks like the screwdriver slot was stripped out and there was some damage to the threads.

I had this happen on another carb. during a rebuild. I faced off the end of the jet, re-cut the screwdriver slot and ran a die down the threads to clean them up.

Re-used the jet with no problems.

Ken, I've got several of that style, but there are many different jet (bore) sizes in that type. Please, either the numbers on the head, or the drill size of the bore. The two I have in hand are #163S-13 and #163S-12, and I have others.

If I have it, it's yours for the postage.

What happened to me:

The slot stripped out and I couldn't get it out. I cleaned out the threads in the carb body after I got the jet pulled out.

What the picture doesn't show is where the needle portion of the jet became detached from the piece with the external threads. I believe this happened when I removed the jet- I had to drill it out with a 3/32 drill bit and use a reverse threaded screw extractor. I don't think that I could reuse this jet because it's now in two pieces.

OK, I'll mail you the #12. If your concerned about the slightly larger jet size (and I wouldn't be, especially if your burning E10 gasoline which tends to give leaner mixtures) you could fill the tube with silver solder and redrill to match a #11.

Owen, I believe the question is answered in the PM, but my jet is the same size as a #65 drill, and for general info, the part number is #11-165s. I'll use the #12, and I'm pretty sure it will be fine.
