Oil Pan Removal -46 Clipper

Dear PackardInfo folks,

My Brother Ray has a 46 Clipper Deluxe with a 120" wb.

He is having trouble getting the oil pan removed because of frame clearance.

I have a 127' wb on my 41 Clipper -- It comes off w/o any problem once you drop the steering bracket. I'm not much help to Ray and we're 500miles apart.

ANY IDEAS OUT there. ???

Have your brother get a copy of the Packard Service Manual 1946-1950. Under Section V- Engine page 5 gives a description of oil pan removal..An alternate would a Motor's Manual or Chilton Manual...Good Luck

Is it possible that his front motor mount bushing has collapsed, making it impossible to reach the bolts?

I suggested another clearance possibility to Ray. I found in a 2008 thread that BigKev commented on.

He said that loosening the front motor mounts and jacking the front of the engine a bit gave enough clearance to get his 53(?) oil pan out.

Since the rear mounts are way back at the transmission, it should give enough room to get the oil pan out.

We will let you know how it goes.

I have taken the oil pan off my '47 Super Clipper at least 3 times. The front motor mount fatigue might be his problem which can be resolved by slightly lifting on the front of the engine block with a jack but also the crankshaft has to be turned a certain way also at least on the 356 engine. Once the pan bolts are all off and the pan has been cleared from the block a slight turn of the crankshaft might be necessary.

It is worse than that.
Your 47 super Clipper is on a 127" wb.
A 46 Clipper Deluxe is on a 120" wb.
The extra 7 inches moves your oil pan 7 inches back from the chassis frame cross member.

On a 120" wb frame the oil pan is actually ABOVE the cross member of the frame. It is 7 inches farther FORWARD than on a 127" frame setup.

I don't have any pictures and I am 6oo miles from my brother's shop.

I saw my mechanic tonight and he agreed that he has had to loosen front motor mounts in such a situation on other cars.
So it is not just a Packard problem.

It is more an "amateur mechanic, hobby mechanic, DIY-mechanic" problem. Like me and a 600+ other PI members

Like I stated earlier, page 5 engine section of the 46-50 Packard service manual addresses the issue. I'm a do-it-yourselfer with a 46 clipper deluxe, a service manual and some tools and managed to remove my oil pan. Maybe your brother has a Packard mechanic in his hometown or nearby! Good luck to him!
