...Maybe so but I'll bet things would not have been quiet if the upholstery in the generals car was stained. Stain prevention equals the driver staying a sergeant--unless it was Sgt. McIllhenny----Gen Savage to Sgt as he was sewing on stripes again: "McIllhenny, If we keep having these ups and downs, I suggest you put those stripes on with zippers." (12 O'clock High, 1949)... Crazy world: if a German soldier at the front would have fold a towel to cover his seat against dirt than the general would fold him. Well, after a short check I'm glad to report that the sergeant obviously made a good job. Everything is clean. [picture source: LIFE]

A real sergeant, a real dog and real Packard scouts
A real sergeant always finds a way out. "Sir, begging your pardon, but the generals dog has the runs, Sir! Quote: ...One thing about the Clipper looks funny. Is that a real right hand drive or is the photo reversed. I invite a look at the accelerator and brake area and suspect the car was born differently. Quote: ...Do rite hand drive vehicles have rite foot accelerator pedal or left foot???? I've had some rite hand drive US postal vehicles in the past but can't remeber. Howard, Dave & Keith, as the following photograph seems to prove, somebody jumbled the direction of the pics. But real Packard scouts blow all cover. [picture source: LIFE]

The photo was reversed/mirrored - RHD has the same pedal configuration as LHD with the right foot accelerator pedal. The photo is of a LHD car.

...Also Notice what appears to be a rather shade tree wire hanging from the spot lite control... The spot light wire is one possible and most probable explanation. The extra antenna needs another cable. Edit: Quote: Would that be a very early war effort car with the chrome on the dash??? Spot lite is not chrome. To cover the lights but to polish the bumpers has to be those logic of military consequentiality which I'll never understand. [picture source: LIFE] Attach file: (34.37 KB)

Our General had a problem. His thoughts and his body went different ways. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? But Lt. General Emmons was resourceful and became a radio star.

I was just going to ask the General to reduce the photographer to the ranks but unfortunately too late. Meanwhile he preferred another and more clear solution and blowed his stripes to smithereens.
