1934 Packard 1104 Rear Axle

I am pretty sure Standard Eight and Super Eight axles are different. I need an axle for my 1104 and want to confirm the part number. Can anyone provide the part number(s) for left and right axle for Standard Eight and Super Eight?

Also, having never removed one, has anyone here done this job and would like to chime in. I am only removing the left axle.

Apparently, Lead-foot Laferriere pushed his Packard too hard this past weekend to Brattelboro, VT with the 1934 Packard Touring. It was to be filled with fun and lots of photo ops and covered bridges. 5 miles from my final destination my rear axle decided to let go right in the center of town. Flatbed tow to my friends house ($150) and Taxi back to Smithfield RI @ ($410) as this area and surrounding area closes on Friday afternoon and re-opens on Monday.

Thanks to everyone.

Phil, read again. Nothing was open in VT or any nearby city for that matter.

Tom, I've pulled these axles quite a few times, most recently just last week to repack my rear wheel bearings. Its a very straight-forward and simple operation, seals readily available, but setting the axle shaft end play is critical and can take some special effort. Call me if you wish to discuss further, but you can read some details at:

packardclub.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=266&start=10

Eight & Super Eight axles are different, as are left and right.

Dave,

As always, great information. The unique challenge I am going to have is to get the broken axle out.

I probably will call you on this.

Tom

Tom, I suppose they can break just about anywhere; about 5 or 6 inches from the housing flange is where mine broke back in 1999 and hopefully yours is similar and then the following should help. Regardless of how you want to approach it, you'll want to remove the inner seal to provide some working room. No need to remove the inner race. A strong magnet is one possibility though you need to wrap it in something to keep it from getting stuck against the housing bore as you insert it. But a length of fine, flexible wire, like picture hanging wire or a guitar wire, with a loop on the end should do the job Open the loop, insert into the housing bore, and with a small piece of dowel or something get the loop around the axle stub end. Then use the dowl to hold the loop in place while you pull the wire taught - and....viola! Something like the old Chinese finger toy is another possibility.

Tom: If your axle broke near the spline you might find it instructive to read Neil Maken's article in the current (August) issue of Skinned Knuckles. It relates to his multiple rear axle failures on a 32 Nash, and his (and others) analysis of the problem. It would appear that inadequate axle shaft end-play might be the culprit, though that is not yet confirmed.

PS - spline end of a 1934 Eight axle shaft. Super 8 shaft dimensionally a bit different but same general style.
