I'm considering taking a road trip and driving up for this event. Always nice to meet some new Packard folks that are driving distance away.

Mal, sadly the "stripper clipper" will not be making the journey. Hopefully by then the floors will be hole free, but not the rest of the car. It's about a 7 hour drive on the I-5 . This town is up in the Bay Area.

Go on Kev! Nothing like a good prolonged high speed drive to blow out the cobwebs and free up sticky and noisy valves as well as rings!

Mal I am more worried about blowing parts of the Ultramatic all over the road! 1,000 miles round trip is a long way on a car that doesn't have a working lockup convertor.
Also at this point their is no interior in the car, door handles...or weather stripping. All which can make for a rather unpleasant drive. Sorry it's going to have to be the Sorento that takes me there and back.

I think I will be using the Cajon pass as my test bed before I test it on the Grapevine. At least the Cajon pass it towing distance home! At this point I haven't even had the car out on the highway. Just all local in-town streets.

Hadn't considered the difference in gas mileage between running on straight convertor, and direct. I wonder what the difference would be.
In comparison, my daily driver (2012 Sorento) gets 32mpg out on the highway, has A/C and Sat radio and seats up to 7. So I think with a long drive like this, it is going to be my vehicle of choice. Plus the Clipper is not much to look upon at this point. She still needs a lot of work before she is ready for public scrutiny. If I get far enough along with the rust repair and the tranny stays together, and the weather looks clear (no weather stripping remember), I am possible thinking of driving the Clipper to Laughlin.

Kev, If you are going take the PCH at least one way. Also, 101 is a much nicer drive than the I-5. The NorCal folks are just great people, and you will have a splendid time. If per chance you spot a nice pair of back up lights for my 55 Clipper, get them and I will reimburse. I am willing to go $100 for a really nice pair (plus shipping).
