conversion from up to down-draft carburetor on 32 (900)

Dear All,

I have read that Packard offered a kit to convert the 9th series Eights to down-draft carburetors. I am considering doing this with my 900. I figure the conversion requires:

A) Manifolds. Will standard 33-34 eight manifolds bolt on? Seems like they should.

B) Carburetor: Stromberg EE-22? Other?

C) Modified linkage

D) Different exhaust pipe flange.

Anything I am not considering? Any clues as to the answers to A and B?

Thanks,

Tom

because the downdraft carburetor is reputed to be a more reliable carburetor. The light eight had the last of the Model 51 carbs, which are notorious for fuel bowl problems, etc. Or, as JW says...
Right now I have a super nice intake manifold (just got at Hershey) and am hot on the trail of an exhaust manifold....contact me if you want dibs. OH, and two different choke setups, depending on which carburetor you wind up running and which exhaust manifold choke setup....

Tom,

My '32 was converted sometime in the past probably pre-WWII. It has the Stomberg EE-22. While I'm still working on putting it together and can't help with the linkage (but would really like to see a picture of what it might look like) you will also need an air cleaner and bracket and I think the the rod that runs between the firewall and radiator on the right side.

For parts, contact Bruce Blevins. He's a Michigan Region Packard Club member and also produces several Packard parts new. He may have enough spares for you to do what you need. Good luck.
