The quickest way to determine how many mains a straight eight has if the #'s are not there or legible is to look on the passenger side of the engine block, down below the fuel pump, on the oil galley. If you see 8 little 1/8" NPT plugs, you have a nine main (the other one would be where the oil pump is, but isn't there, since the oil pump is) If there's 5, then you have your answer.
BTW, where in Kansas are you?

Kansasboy, to the Site. If you haven't already done so could you add your '48 to the Owner Registry including a pic and it's history. if known? Eric, You might have a Packard friend closer to home now rather than 10,000 miles away!

Well, 45 miles is a LOT closer than most of the people on here.
Kansasboy, one of these day's we'll have to get together around a sixpack and chat about Packards.

Great, thanks for that. Always good to see another Packard on the Site. BTW - Looks like you're a night owl, so join Eric and me in the Chat Room sometime.

Sounds good. How long have you had your packards? Are you aquainted with the late Ken Price or Alan Rich?

I have had a Packard in one form or another since I was 19, which was 13 years ago. and no, I've never met them, I'm kinda alone here when it comes to Packards, which is why I'm on here so much!

Well we are definitely going to have to get together, there may be more Packard people around than you think.
My grandfather bought a 49 Super new and when he passed my father kept it around for most of my childhood. The one I owned longest was a 48 Custom, still sorry I let that one go.But the list of ones I let go includes: 41 180 seven pass 55 Caribbean 55 400 (2) 53 Cavalier Scads of Studes an a sprinkling of other makes now I have mainly Internationals and a 56 Golden Hawk.
