Placement for coil and horns in a 38 eight

Can anyone provide a photograph showing how the coil and horns are secured on the engine of a 1601 (38 eight)? The parts book shows the coil as being somehow secured to the plug wire harness (spark plug wire tube assembly). Not really certain where the horns go. Laurie's car had a cobbled together solution, and we would like to get it right.

Also, the parts book specifies an "Autolite spl 12 volt" 16th series juniors. First, why a 12 volt coil? Second, what would a modern equivalent be?

Thanks,

Tom

I have a friend with a very original and unmolested 1601 and I was intending to take photos of some other details on Saturday. I'll post it then unless your answer comes along sooner.

I can take photos for you Saturday, but just speaking with the owner, the horn bracket attaches to cylinder head bolts, driver's side near the rear. The coil bracket also attaches to a head bolt forward of the horns.

Dave,

That would be great! Geez, you sure have a lot of great cars in your area.

Any thoughts on the 12 volt coil?

Thanks,

Tom

There was a thread earlier this year and suggestions were made that several countries had 12v requirements many years before US. In the service manuals there are other electrical items for 12v besides the coil, OD solenoids, starters, etc etc. Think the conclusions were that those items were probably for export vehicles.

OK. Thanks. I guess I missed that discussion. I will look for it.

Now that I look closely at the parts list, there is a 6 volt coil listed. AutoLite CE 4628.

Cheers,

Tom

I think it's in the midst of one of the 12v conversion threads or possibly one of those on foreign vehicles that was removed. Believe the subject came up when we veered off the original topic and another poster asked if anyone had seen or knew where to get a 12v something or other.

Horn and coil mounting from an original car. The coil mounting position is correct but the bracket was made to replace the original and my differ slightly in details. Hope these pictures help.

Dave,

Thanks tons. That is very interesting. The mounting holes for the coil are in a very different location from where they might be on Laurie's car. I will be stopping by the shop early next week and will grab some photos.

Tom, the photos O_D provided show that the horns and their mounting are like my '37's. Also, the location of the coil is the same as my 6-cylinder, but mine has the original bracket. Let me know if you would like to look at my car.
