A sidelight of the thief-proof number is that it may be the only true determination of ownership. A 56 Caribbean was stolen in Calif. and although they located the car, they could not prove it because the vin tag had been removed. If they had recorded the thief-proof number, they could have documented ownership. I have done so on all three of my vehicles - thanks to Dave Czirr.
