As far as performance goes, the Packard straight eight might just fool you.
When it was a new car the hot performers were the V8 Chrysler, Cadillac and Oldsmobile. The Packard was seen as an old man's car yet in terms of speed, was not far off the V8 mark. Top speed of the Packard 400 was 101 or 102 MPH compared to 110 for the Chrysler and 105 for the Cadillac. If the straight eight is running right you will have no problem keeping up with traffic, climbing any main road hill in high gear, or cruising on the hiway at 70MPH.

I'm not concerned with how she drives in traffic, I'm quite sure the straight 8 would be adequate for 70 mph cruising. I'm looking for a car that will run 13 second quarter miles or better. and besides, say I'm ripping on it at a drag strip and break something, I can walk to O'Reilly's down the street and grab whatever I need for my SBC, but anything for a Packard motor will either not be there at all, or it will be on special order. NO!! I won't be making a full on drag car, but a fast street car that can be taken to the track and actually contend with other cars. There's not a cooler 50's car to do that with than a Packard 200.

You're going to need 400 or so HP to make a 3600 lb car to run in the 13s and that won't be a cheap motor.

Hi
To get the performance you'd want, the best combination would be a two door 200 or Clipper with a four barrel 327 ci engine, stick shift with overdrive. The only thing better would be to have a '54 359 ci Senior engine. The man you really need to talk to is Ross Miller and his Speedwell Garage. He knows how to wring the performance out of the straight eight Packard. Steve

I'm perfectly aware of the costs, I've worked out the costs and it'll land around $2500 or so, if I use a decent junkyard motor.
