In my experience with similar failures I would expect to see a ruined taper surface plus a keyway and key damage. You should check the axle taper and keyway before putting it back together.
I just got finished with a total rear end rebuild on my 1950 23rd series. Among other problems one axle was slightly bent causing a wobble in the brake drum. That would be another item to check.

I completely agree, Fred - good advice. One thing I've found over the years; folks who have a hard time removing a rear brake drum will sometimes think they're doing the smart thing by using Never-Seize or a lubricant on the axle taper, thinking it will ease future removal. WRONG - first step on the path to a ruined axle and brake drum. The taper, inside and out, should be clean and dry, and the nut tightened to specification.
