Please find attached other Chaika foreign-language advertising campaigns (English, French, Italian, German). I believe that the last of it is of recent date, perhaps for toy cars.

Well I could continue publication of foreign-language advertisings until the point it would all Greek to you. Just for the record, the U.S.S.R. made a determined but ultimately unsuccessful marketing effort to sell Chaikas to the world outside of the iron curtain. Perhaps they used impressing pics of Chaika's just with the intention of getting public attention for good sellers.

Quote:
Guscha, does a Tshaika have solid axles with leaf springs at rear ends?...

Compared to the TL-system the Chaika suspension wasn't something special. The Soviets regularly avoided a thinking beyond conventional approach, unless they entered uncharted waters. Ok, that is a classical oversimplification, because never in the human genesis had taken place a "national thinking". A mental process especially is defined as individual process.

Now I have lost the thread of the conversation.

front: independent, trapeze-shaped A-arm suspension, coil springs, hydraulic dampers

rear: solid axle, semi-elliptic leaf springs, hydraulic telescopic dampers

OK folks, I gotta come out of the closet here... I have to say that IMO the Chaika was actually, in some respects, a better designed car than the Packard/Clipper ... the grille design the Stude looking tailights, the Mopar clone windshield, all were incredibly well executed! Who'da thunk it? ... let the flaming begin!

Sorry, I've been away and didn't see these until today - great pics, Gerd - as always! ...ya, a car nut I am, hardly ever met a car that I didn't like, or at least find pretty darn interesting! No doubt Chaikas weren't put together as well as US cars... hey, it helps to have practice making 10+ million cars every year! CCCP mechanicals were probably kept simple and rugged to deal with the primitive road conditions outside of the few big cities? And selling them to foreigners a challenge, maybe due to a lack of dealer and part networks, and to styling, though of my favorite era the mid 50s, that was always years behind! But they sure did a good job with what they had to work with, imo.

Less sometimes is more. But was it really better and intentional to have e.g. a cardan tunnel between the legs instead of hypoid cogs inside of the rear axle differential? It's more likely that other aspects like technology and money had a mayor influence (oil quality).
To say it with BigKev:

Quote:
They just market that as a feature....aka Child Safety Windows.

A broken interior door handle quickly becomes......Child Safety Locks.

Well, financial constraints sometimes lead to simple but durable solutions.

Hi Guscha

Maybe a combination '58 Ambassador and '58 Studebaker....and throw in a little bit Humber Super Snipe!

Looking at the Chaika on the lift, were those perimeter frames or unibodies?

Steve
