Been in garage tonight. to check valve timing
Manual says to set # 1 exhaust tappet to .017 at TDC
then insert a .004 feeler. and slowly turn eng.in normal rotation until feeler is gripped..(no prob there). then slowly until the feeler is just release.

Per Manual:

If valve timing is correct, the flywheel pointer should now align with a point on the flywheel midway between "1UPDC" and the 10 degree "after" mark

A variation in alignement of 3 graduations either way from this midpoint is permissable. (that would be 5 degrees after. Or in other words anywhere between "1UPDC" and the 10 degree aftermark)

Mine was 2 degrees after "1UPDC" or 2 graduations from the midpoint. which according to the book is permissable.

Phewww !!! didnt really feel like taking the front end apart to get to the timing chain...

Some how i think we are narrowing it down to Fuel, Carb, or timing on distributor like many of you suggest.

In addtion, tommarrow im gonna check the valve clearances on that # 3 piston which was showing 30 psi

back into garage tonight.

Since the cam timing was in specs
and the valve cover removed. I decided to check the clearances...manual states to set valves warm to tolerance of .007 intake and .011 exhaust..Ive allowed .02 over cold. till eng eventually takes..eventually ..the key word.

but cold I found the following cold clearances

#2 intake was.005
#3 exhaust was less than .004..it was smallest feeler I had
#6 intake was .004
#6 exhaust was .006

the rest were all .013 and .009 respectively exhaust and intake.

to review fuel and carb(again) tommarrow

It would be very interesting to know what the compression is now ,after adjusting the valves.

okay it's saturday been up since 5 am..

reset distr. timing and flywheel per Owen D. tech letter.
Very easy to understand.

Cranked it...smelled gas..good...but no fire..

pulled # 1 plug and wire grounded against block...NO Spark.
went back into distr..with ign on and grounded points..spark blue white but not strong..I can recall years back when this was done, they'd really snap at you...anyways

Took coil wire and and held it close to block...not a Blue White spark but a yellowish..

okay...off comes the coil for bench test with my NEW trusty dusty Craftsman multimeter...Yesss

Dont know how to read the resistance results but here goes

Secondary windings

set at 20k 0
2000 1.0
200 1.4

Primary windings

set at 20k 3.84

went to Motor Maunual 1940
gives the equipment data

coil idling draws 1/2 amp 2 1/2 stopped.

MY SWEETHEART IS TALKING TO ME ONCE AGAIN....yesssss
The other one..welllll that's another story.

it WAS the TIMING of the distributor. I kept nudging or advancing the points closer to the high point of distr. cam
and vrrroommmmm after two cranks..

she sounds like a bunch of nuts in a can..because of the clearances of .09 intake and .013 exhaust..but i can deal with that by readjusting...

she does however smell rich as hell...but she's running none the less...

yeah there was a small bit f light blue smoke from the exhaust but im assuming it was from the oil i had put into each cyc when testing for compression.

as far as the other lady in the household....in bed with larangitis...

'oh hon !!! look what you're love made JUST FOR YOU !!!.. a nice pot roast and a Waldorf salad... and for desert hon..your favorite!!!...homeade chocolate e clairs with Homade custard filling...mmmmm...!!

Guys... I may not be that smart as far as Packards go..but as far as the home front is concerned..I ain't suicidal !!!!

Sandy, I am soooooooo happy that you got the old gal (the Packard I mean) running. Seems like a little tweaking is in order but that's small potatoes. Congratulations! I was thinking of travelling down to Windsor to see my siblings etc. and thought I might come over to see if I could help you in Deetroit but it seems you have it under control.
