I highly recommend cutting the access hole for the fuel sender. I wish I would've done it back when I installed my new tank. I figured it would all be fine because it was new. It wasn't fine, and dropping the tank over and over again got old really fast. With the hole cut I never have to drop the tank again. Just lift up my carpet, remove wire, remove lock ring, remove sender. I can now replace the sender in like 2 minutes.

The measurements are here on the website, and I used those when I cut mine. Shown in the video at 11:24:

This remind me, were the tanks originally silver or were they black? I know on my 1951 Henney-Packard is was originally black but not sure on the passenger cars.

Does the Carpenter one hit the bottom of the tank? You could tell by placing it very nearly flush in its mount and rotating it, you would feel scraping.

If not, I would leave it. That way your gauge reads empty on empty. Big deal if it reads full when 3/4 full.

If it has the same amount of travel, but the float position is different, I would bend the arm so the float travels the same as the original. You could hook it up and test it before installing it.

I think the crux of the issue is that many people have complained that the Ford units have shorter arms.

Shouldn't be terribly hard to just cut the arm and braze a length of wire on as another option.
