I had the modified pins pressed back in to the axle last week and mounted the springs and front axle back on the frame today using my fancy new shackle bolts. I assembled the steering knuckles on the kingpins and they work nicely however it turns out my upper bearings also need to be replaced. These bearings are under just a small amount of thrust load but it was enough to create gouges in them similar to the old bearings in the base of the knuckles.

The new shackle / spring pivot bolts didn't come with nuts so I ordered some from McMaster however they were too tall when checked against the rusty originals. A visit to the bridgeport made short work of the additional 1/16" and a after a few coats of primer I will add them to the car.

I had a little extra time today so I got the hub puller out and decided to start working on the rear axle. My hope is that it needs nothing but a cleaning, painting and some new seals. The hubs came off with a bang after I heated up the preloaded them and put a torch on the hub.

I decided that this was to be the weekend that I got in to the rear end. I knew it was going to be dirty so I woke up and threw on some old jeans and a dirty T shirt and armed myself with a socket wrench. This is what I found inside the differential case:

The oil inside the case was thicker than honey and smelled like the very essence of toxic waste. I took about 4 hours in the parts cleaner to get it all out and by the time I was done I smelled just as pad as the differential. The results were encouraging though so I attacked the case and cover as well.

The case was covered in crud and rust. The crud came off with a can of Easy Off oven cleaner and some steel wool. Spray, wait 20 minutes, scrub, hose off, repeat. The rust was a little harder to get off, this required a 4 1/2" angle grinder and another 4 hours of grinding. I went through a couple of pairs of rubber gloves and a breathing mask but I still feel like I took a year off my life doing this work. The results were pretty nice though.

The gaskets for the differential were shot so I made some new ones using the cover as a guide. I have a few X-Acto scars but with care I was able to avoid any new ones.
