More Pictures of the Ultramatic cleaning.

I bought a case of Valvoline Type F with the intent of using it with a BG Quick Cleaner and refilling it with Trick Shift after that.

Besides cleaning out the fluid coupling, does anyone know if it's possible to replace the actual gear oil in the transmission with it still on the car? I figure that, too, must be 56 years old and I would like to change it.

You're right about the compression check but with the concern of possible bent valves from the head machining and what sounds like possible weak rings, I thought I might do it while ie was unbuttoned.

I probably need to clean some of the sludge off the main bearings and crank.

There won't be much oil left in the transmission after cleaning the pan and draining the torque converter, only what is still in the control valve and servos.
The cleaning cycle should take care of flushing that out.

Finally, I did find one unidentifiable piece in the transmission. Other forum participants who dropped their pans found debris/pieces so i was Be On the Look Out (BOLO).

Sorry the pictures are slightly out of focus; I still am only using my phone's camera.

The piece looks like half of some sort of tapered cylinder. I placed a quarter next to it for sizing purposes.

Looks like one half of a valve spring retainer!

That's what I was going to say, but he says it's from the transmission pan?

Very sloppy mechanic?

Sorry. I jumped subjects. That was in the engine oil pan.

I was trying to upload all the pictures from this weekend's work prior to going back to the Salt Mine on Monday...

So...Valve spring retainer. That's bad, right?

If it was just dropped, not retrieved and another used in it's place by the sloppy mechanic, probably OK. If, for some reason, it's slipped out while running (broken valve spring?) would be a different answer.

It might not be... if you read past threads, you'll find several that caution the reader to block the oil outlets in the lifter gallery before messing with the spring retainers. Otherwise a retainer can easily end up in the oil pan (as you see). Chances are it's just a retainer that got away from a butterfingered mechanic who didn't block the oil outlets. You can check your spring retainers easily enough by removing the lifter covers. I suspect it's just one that got away and was replaced during a valve job in the distant past.
