Hi,

There are no markings indicating date of manufacture on any of the Lester 700x17 Whitewall tyres currently on the car.

There is only size and maker information.

This does surprise me, as I assumed date of manufacture would be an important safety feature.

Is the requirment for this different in the States?

The words 'NOT FOR HIGHWAY USE' come to mind, but I have no desire to fit black wall tyres.

Regards,

Pat

The tire date code is in four digits. The first two are for the week and the last two are for the year (e.g., 3010 would decode to mean the tire was made during the 30th week of 2010).

"'NOT FOR HIGHWAY USE (Service)'". That is often abbreviated "NHS" and is a warning to heed. NHS is usually on low speed Ag tires moulded in conspicuous letters on the side wall.

FWIW, the data representing manufacturing plant, mold # and date code on my older Lesters are on the inboard side, down near the rim. One of my spares, bought in December 1986, is marked "DYX5 K6X 466". All but the 466 appears to be a permanent part of the mold, the 466 appears as if a small metal tag with replaceable content was affixed to the mold as the tire was vulcanized. I presume this indicates manufacture in the 46th week of 1986.

"DY" was the manufacturer's code for Denman Tire Corporation, Levittsburg OH who for many years was the actual manufacturer for the Lincoln Highway and later Lester Tire products. I don't know if they are still an active manufacturer and for how long they might have made the Lincoln & Lester brands, perhaps even still today? I guess we pretty much all know that few if any collector car tires are actually made by the company shose name is on the sidewall. You can use the site below to find who actually made your tires if you're interested.

PS - I did check the GoodYear collector-car radials on my 56 Carib, they are made by GoodYear. And yes, Denman still is an active producer, also making the Martin brand as well as their own Denman brand.

I am a bit surprised that the ability to identify the manufacturer and plant location of our collector tires (link in the above post) didn't generate any interest. Was this not of interest, or did this just get passed by? Or was it already known?

EDIT: Here's the markings on a Lester (now a spare tire). The 3-digit data field (the variable part of the data) is the date code, 3-digit codes used prior to 2000 I believe.

Yes. Many thanks for the link provided. Saved it in my "foavorite places" list on computer. I have no reproduction tyres currently in my posession any more so i had nothing to go check to make any comment about.

Edit: Wait a minute, i have several Cokers. M/C and scooter repop tires. I'll try to check those tomorrow.

Found these markings on one of my tires that developed a bulge not long after I fitted it as you can see by the picture. (you will note some 'heel and toe' wear due to badly adjusted brakes at the time)

Was the tyre manufactured in June 2006? Over to you brainy types!
