"... In a derailment at Santa Gertrudis, he [Sam Robertson] broke both legs and several ribs, but stayed on the job, learning to use crutches with such agility he could catch a moving train..."

The above mentioned accident seems to cause a kind of inurement effect, since Col. Sam Robertson was the builder of the railed Don Patricio Causeway to Padre Island, opened on July 4, 1927.

As a big monorail fan myself (I have several HO scale Schuco sets), I had no idea this one existed! Certainly not the first monorail by a long shot but definitely an interesting one, especially as it's Packard powered.

A Packard train but without rails. The caption reads: "A tour group at Packard circa 1945, when the plant was manufacturing aircraft engines for the war."

There's life in the old thread yet. The pics illustrate the Finnish way on how to rail a Packard. -> There is a tiny little bit more information.

Translation from Finnish of the description in the link, talks about a jack built underneath the car to turn it around.

"1970 The car was a 1938 model American Packard with rubber wheels and was used on the road. At some point, the wheels were replaced with iron wheels and a jack built underneath the car, which could lift the car up against the rails so that the car could be turned so that the car's cam was brought home and the wheels lowered onto the rails. This car was used by VR at the then Sein?joki electrical service in 1962 and 1970. By car, the electric department manager and his assistants made inspection visits to the stations, checking the electrical and telephone equipment, and the installer for repair and maintenance. The drivers were a few electricians who had passed a specific qualification for driving on the track. Raimo Tullila in the picture sitting on the roof of a car. Photo: Raimo Tullila Collection"

Looks like there were at least two of these vehicles from this comment:

"A really cool picture of a rare subject. VR had two 1938 Packards. This number is just hidden behind the front fender and I can only figure out the letter ... HR ... Opportunities are Rto HR 7 -> Rau-Rto 3. Engine power is 120hp and allowed speed is 80km / h. The wheel had a diameter of 860mm, a wheelbase of 3810mm, a length of 5750mm and a weight in running condition of 2.88t (3.6t at normal load), which was rejected by the track department on 17.1.1962. The second option is even more exotic: it came from Rauma Railway on July 1, 1950 and was taken to VR's Warehouse on February 15, 1952 with the number Vo HR 12. Since then, the numbers (at least on paper) have been Ko HR 12 and Rau-Ko 1. the specifications do not give the allowed speed, but the wheelbase was 3550mm, length 5750mm, width 1900mm, height 1950mm and weight unladen as much as 4.0 tonnes (the swivel added weight?). The car was located in the Sk 8th Electric Area since May 11, 1960 and was abandoned on November 18, 1964. Could you see in the original picture what HR says above? Hasn't the same Cadillac in Hyvink?? been in the Vaasa Car Museum?"
