Seems like you might have found the problem, that's great.

Going back to your pictures, things look good to me. The impeller on our water pump was at least 1/4" off the face, whereas yours is nice and tight. The holes in the water jacket on ours were misplaced (hand-drilled) but yours looks like what I would expect. Besides the buildup of scale and crud, I don't really see anything that I would be concerned about.

Hopefully you're good to go after this!

Especially with an asbestos/fiber type head gasket you will need to retorque after a bit of heating/cooling to the block.

Even for the cheap type, one pass with the torque wrench is not enough. On my V8 I needed 2 passes, for only 15 head bolts. In other words, I torqued them all down to 60 ft-lbs in order twice, then for bolt #1 on the third pass it was already at least 55 ft-lbs (the V8 spec is 55-60).

This car has a newer copper head gasket and the head was machined because of a blown head gasket. Turned out the head was a banana, so they had to start resurfacing from the center out.
