It can't hurt to replace them all. The question is...why did they snap. Did you put too much torque on them, or did they snap for some other reason? David Packard has laid out the correct torque and it should not be exceeded. Ernie in Arizona

It broken bolts with a regular socket wrench, yet have removed other fastens far more rusted with an impact wrench.

If a fastener fights me at all, I switch to the impact. That hammering motion tends to help break up rust hold.

So I was actually putting the clutch back on when they snapped- i looked up the torque spec , 25-28 off the top of my head. Set my wrench to 25 and started tightening in a starpattern 1/4 turn at a time and then they just started snapping before the wrench clicked. So long story short I’m not sure what led to them snapping. I’m thinking probably just because they were old? Or possibly because the machine shop machined my flywheel?

Remove what you're trying to attach, and run a bolt down by hand on all of the holes to make sure there's no dirt, chips, or debris binding up the threads. If there is, that would load the bolt differently than not and possibly cause a problem.

Though it sounds like the bolts are just worn out. I would get a new set in a case like this.

'55 400. Needs aesthetic parts put back on, and electrical system sorted.
'55 Clipper Deluxe. Engine is stuck-ish.

That was kind of my plan. My only concern is the ones I ordered from max Merritt are used… I just hope they aren’t only supposed to be used once.

These don’t wear out. The only reason I had to replace mine was that some had the threads rounded over by being forced at some point into the holes without first aligning the flywheel.

That said, if you’re sure you set the torque wrench properly, there is no way these should have snapped even if they were somehow able to bottom out which can’t happen.

If there is room

Chase the threads.

Inner. / outer.

I had cooler bolts heads come off. 5/16-18.

They only take 15-18 lbs.

Fatigue..

Inexpensive torque wrenches tend to lose calibration quickly, especially if they are stored left set on a number vs loose.

Alright so it sounds like this next time round I am going to;
1- replace all hardware
2- chase/clean all the threads
3- use a better torque wrench

Also another question- these shouldn’t use any type of thread locker should they? I never found anything in the shop manual so I am assuming no…

Personal opinion: The powered wrenches are good for initial tightening, but I alway use a manual torque wrench to do the final two or three rounds of tightening to spec. You can feel if there is something not right with a manual wrench and stop and correct before damage is done.
