I think this circle has been squared. Unless something new and verifiable comes along, it is my understanding the Packard continued to build the conventional/traditional bodies (with exceptions already noted) through the 20th series; and, that Briggs built all of the Clipper bodies for the 19th and 20th series. Thanks to all for their time and efforts to bring this to a resolution. Another question answered. This is all from me on this.

Thanks again. The attached pdf-file reports about a Packard press machine, purchased in pre war times and maintained 14 years later at the same location.

BTW In reply to my questions to the Clipper owners I received two automatic newsletters...

This was indeed an interesting and enjoyable exercise tracking this little piece of history. It still leaves open the question of whether the prewar Briggs bodies had an identifying body tag as the postwar bodies did.

Dave, if the new hypothesis corroborates and especially if you don't find a pre war Briggs Body Number then we have to edit the related identification-FAQ.

Do any of you know the build year of this mill "Cincinnati no 4"? Is it identifiable if the mill has been manufactured before or after 1935?

I do have a 1941 Clipper. There is a Briggs body tag on it and it matches the vin# 1401-9417 which I'm in the process of restoring

To quote Dave (O_D), who said there nine years ago:

Quote:
I've seen metal tags with body-type numbers followed by other numerals on 41-42 conventional bodies. I even have photos of one or more of them. Problem is, unlike the postwar tags, it doesn't have "Briggs" embossed on the tag, just the number on a plain tag screwed to the engine side of the cowl. Perhaps a precursor to the later style Briggs tag?

Now if I had a picture of a tag from a 41 or 42 Clipper and they had the same size, style, font, etc., then I think we might be able to draw a conclusion.

George, thanks for your comment. Would you mind posting photographs of all three numbers?
