Lots of questions this evening.

finally got the oil pan off. found some sludge in the bottom. not as bad as I would have thought.

found a little pin in the bottom though. 1/4" dia. and about 3/8" long. see photo.
any ideas where would this have come from?? and is there a greater concern to be had??

oil pan is pretty beat up, looks like it was brazed at some point, I expect attempting to straighten it is not a good idea? so I will have to replace it when and if I can find someone up here to rebuild the motor.

anything else I should do or be looking at before I clean up the pan and re install it?
any tips or tricks for removing the old gaskets? they are stuck on there something fierce.

as I take parts off I try to clean them up best I can prior to storing them away. should be no concerns there no? should I put a little oil in the power steering pump when I put it way? will be ordering a rebuild kit for in in the future. will look for kits for the other Bendix power steering items.

question, (one of Many, Sorry) the return hose.........just clamps to hold it together? what would be the proper length? as when I pulled it off it was not routed beside the pressure hose. I am concerned it might have been shortened.

the idler arm........does it come apart? and how? it seems quite loose, can it be tightened? or rebuilt? I don't see much info on it in the manual.

my apologizes for being long winded this evening.

Looks like your pan should be replaced as it's a bit too far gone to repair.

I'll let those with more recent experience (and especially V8 experience) answer the other questions but if there is a pickup float of some sort for the oil, that should be thoroughly cleaned.

Looks like a dowel.

Do a part search for dowel and see if it matches anything.

The return hose just has screw type clamps to hold it to the fittings. Return side has virtually no pressure to worry about.

On the PS hose routings check out parts plates illustrations 31C or 31D depending on whether your unit is a Bendix or Monroe unit. The routing is almost the same for either until after the final clamp.http://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/partslist/platelist.php?cat=26&partslist=1955-1956

That large curved rubber piece your photo shows near the pump is supposed to be positioned near the rear of the long fresh air vent tube just before it transitions into the fabric duct. A large hose clamp is what holds it to the tube. If your clamp is missing you can buy something very similar at the home center. Look in the heating and AC dept for the clamps used for holding the large 8" or 10" flexible type heating ducts to various metal room duct outlets.

At the rear of the head there should be two metal straps fastened to the Ultramatic throttle linkage bracket. Those will place and hold a hose on either side of the vertical part of the bracket. From there the hoses drop down to another clamp and rubber piece which is bolted to the frame. They then make a final loop into the PS unit. At intervals between the fixed clamps there is what is essentially a tie wrap. Instead of todays nylon ties, Packard used a thin metal strap -- usually brass -- that was typical for the time.

Howard thank you
There was a large loose clamp on the air duct, for the rubber pc I see now.
I do not have clamps for the hoses near the throttle linkage, will add them to the list. The return line was looped up behind the carburetor and down behind the engine not next to the pressure hose, will reroute that hose later on and see if it is long enough.

LTRD- did not know I could do a search like that, thanks. No luck yet finding a dowel with the same dimensions though, will keep looking

Used trans oil will protect the parts. I use straight diesel oil. And a 50.50 mix with trans oil.

Also for removing rusted bolts. Can't. Remember if the oil pump had dowels for vacuum unit.

If it's a dowel pin it sure is a short stout one! It looks more like a roller bearing to me but I'm not familiar enough with Packard V8 engines to know although I don't think they ever had one so maybe it was something that someone just dropped in for some reason. Is it magnetic? Sometimes magnets were put into the pan to collect fine steel particles.

well after some serious investigation (and blind luck)I finally found out where the dowel laying in the bottom of the oil pan came from.

the oil pump.....I removed it to clean the pick up screen and gain access to scrape the gasket off from the oil pan and found that it belonged there. how it came about laying in the bottom of the pan? I don't know.

it does go not go easily, so will try to reinstall it tomorrow.
