Hi, owen,

Have not looked up autolite, packard lists champion, all the engines i have had ,,,,had champion, that includes spares.

i have seen ac and autolite, to me, it was lower class plug. But with these cars you have to use what ever is on the market, and price.. for me anyway...

i always have had good service with champions, i think i used ac and they kept fouling. think it was a GM, thing.. packard was rejecting it................

Quote:
"I wrote to Champion Spark Plugs Co.,, because, you could not longer get NY-18 sparks plugs, the closest plug NY-16, have not seen them around now."

To obtain a MODERN ez to find CHAMPION plug:
1. Find some obsolete Champion or obsolete AC book that lists the NY-18.

2. USing the obsolete book cross the NY-18 into an AC number.

3. Use the AC number obtained from step 2 to cross into a MODERN CHAMPION number using a MODERN AC OR MODERN Champion book.

The ordinary AutoLite copper-core plugs (forget platinum and all that crap) are a very fine plug, very widely used in Packards. Most spark plug problems are the incorrect reach or the incorrect heat range; after that you'd be hard pressed to ever see a difference in performance between any of the major plug suppliers' products.

PS - If you want to use a Champion or AC, just take the current AutoLite recommendation which you already have and just have your local auto parts store cross reference to those or whatever other brand of your choice. Ignoring resistor plugs for the moment, all a spark plug is, is an , electrode, an air gap, an insulator and a ground; 99.9% of your ignition performance once you have the right plug is determined elsewhere in your ignition system.

And yes, I know others will have very strong opinions that one brand or another performs better in their engine.

Use the autolite.com website. Look up the following:
43xls, r43xls, 44xls, r44xls.

Note that the "R" indicates a resistor plug. BUT the Al website gives the SAME plug number regardless of resisitor or not.

I'm not going into detail on this because very few people understand it, as simple as it is. I'll only say that the problem of sporatic plug coding is a common problem among NON-AC manufactureres, especialy across 10 years or more.

Also the "NY-18" and "NY-16" do not seem to be valid Champion numbers to begin with.

For what it's worth, Napa gives the Champion number as 857 for the 7/16 reach and 405 for the 3/4 reach.

THe websites are just fine. But once again we have the problem that the websites do NOT give a DECIPHERING table for their own plug code system!!! THAT is the PROBLEM!

With out such a chart to decipher the CODE it is impossible to VERIFY such things as HEAT RANGE. The only way to do it is to use the age old (up until about 10years ago) AC codeing system and then cross back into the plug of choice and hope for a miracle.
