I am behind you 100 percent on that one. If I find them will get some for you. Looking for a complete assembly for my 53, already got the deluxe rebuild kit from Katner that I do not need anymore as my core does not look so nice. it did not have any washers also but only got me for 150 bucks or so. I am wondering what I really might be getting on the rebuilt one available, thought I could buy one and use my rebuild kit looking at the insides of the rebuilt one.

This may or may not help but the original Wagner Brake numbers for the copper washers are FC602 for the one between the fitting and master cylinder and FC603 for the one between the retaining bolt and the fitting.
Your parts store may be able to cross reference this to their current part numbers.

We have 2 old Ace Hardware's. Both have a large selection of things that look like they've been there since the year one.

We also have this place
http://www.winkshardware.com/

Wink's is the Powell's Books of hardware stores. Email for what you need, but I still have had a lot of luck at Ace...esp if old. Old is good.

HH56, I too would be annoyed if I spent $480 on a deluxe brake kit and it didn't have two copper washers that are needed, and I'd be inclined to call Kanters to see if they will provide them. But if you can't find them they can be easily made. If you have a friend with a lathe buy some soft copper round of the larger of the outside diameters, bore the hole, and slice them off like pepperoni with a parting tool. If not, just buy some soft copper sheet and punch them out, drill or punch the hole, and then just surface dress them with some emery on a piece of plate glass to remove any burrs. Over the years I've made quite a few this way, the last ones I remember were the copper flat washers that go beneath one or more of the water pump bolts that go thru into the water jacket.

I can report that for those not lucky enough to be able to get an across the counter match, replacement copper washers are available from Napa -- MAYBE. Napa's offerings are in boxes and then quantity bags. Without some dimensions to cross or a number the clerk will not likely be offering to open the boxes and look.

I say maybe because Napa computer systems lie. I have spent the morning chasing to various Napa stores because the computer says a store has them in stock only to get to a store and have the clerk say they do not or they do but can't find them. Very frustrating.

Anyway, for those postwar cars in need here's the replacements. The same numbers were used for a lot of years so should cover quite a few cars. Am sure any others needed are available too -- to find out you have to get the Packard specs out of utility pages, convert to nearest fraction and try to match. Napa calls them sealing washers if you are doing a search on their website.

Both of these replacements are same OD but just a few thousandths larger ID.

1OF750,

Let me know if you still need the two copper washers we would be more than happy to assist you. We normally do not include these in our kits as they were not considered a perishable part in a rebuild. The copper washers are an item that can be re-used, the only time that they should need replacing is if they are cracked, bent, lost, or deformed, we will get the occasional request for them for those exact reasons. The purpose of the copper washer is to take up any small imperfections in the two mating surfaces.

The majority of the aftermarket suppliers over the past 60 years did not supply the copper washers whether it was Wagner, Packard, Raybestos, napa or any other Packard specialist . I think of how many times over the years rebuilding power or manual master cylinders and all the kits that I used came with rubber parts only and no copper washers. Something else to think about the next time you are at the parts store (which I was this past weekend). I need a front brake hose (Dorman brand) for my late model pick up truck and it didn't come with two new copper washers to mount it to the caliper. Should they have supplied them? If it is a perishable item we supply a replacement, we have mimicked the kit that would have been supplied from the original suppliers back when these units were new and we have sold 20,000 plus rebuild kits over our 50 years in business. So if you have an issue, please contact us and we will work with you to help you get back on the road.

Hello James (Kanter)
I've noticed over the last few weeks that you (I believe) have been monitoring this forum and adding information or offering help on a case by case basis on behalf of Kanter. I would like to thank you and Kanter publicly for all that you do for the Packard collectors community, from making and supplying parts to having dedicated personnel ( yourself and people like Stewart B., actually I don't wish to be guilty of errors of omission, so change the "thank you" to everybody involved). I personally appreciate your helping me take care of my 1951 Packard 200, and my 1953 Clipper. Well done and thank you. Regards,

Steve Fisher

Steve,

Thank you for the kind words. My intentions here are not to push Kanter, but rather observe and beware of any issues with our product and services and offer my help when needed. I want people on the forum to feel comfortable in contacting us if they have questions. I enjoy following the posts on this forum and seeing others perspectives on the different issues that arise when working on these cars. As we all know there is more than one way to get the job done. For me these antique cars are my passion whether it be a Packard or any other. I am here to listen and help.

I would think that the copper washers could be annealed to restore softness if they were otherwise serviceable.

There's obviously lots of opinion on these washers.

I have always been of the belief that little things like gaskets or anything that can leak -- no matter how they look or their composition -- should be changed whenever possible when opening up a component or doing a rebuild. Obviously there are times that would not be practical but this, IMO, is not one of them. For a few cents of merchandise why take the chance it's going to fail or, in this case someone is going to get into a project only to find out what they have is not optimum and it will be a long wait while serviceable items are obtained. Just with the problems I had finding them locally, can only imagine what someone even more in the sticks would run into.

To me something that simple thrown into a deluxe rebuild kit would fit in very well with the motto "Do it once and do it Right".
