gas cap

Couple of years ago I bought a gas cap from a Packard parts supplier. It was obviously not nos, but was new. Yesterday, I ran out of gas and went to remove the cap..It twisted but would not release. I ended up prying the ears on the cap open and it came off. Inspecting the cap with one off my other car, I found that the new cap was not as deep. Close but no cigar. Another case of replacement parts that don't work.

Is there a name or a number or any kind of identification on the cap???? My guess is that u ought to be able to buy one at an auto parts store. Take the old along to match up.

Also note that some gas caps of that era mite require to push DOWN on the cap while turning much like a radddiator cap.

I did try at a couple of locals but they did not have a match. The replacement cap I got was not a pushdown. I assume if I order a cap from a Packard guy it would be correct. There are no markings of any kind on the cap.
From the outside it is identical but when I placed them side by side I could see the new one was not as thick as the old one.

Though I still have the OEM gas cap on my 56, I do carry a spare in case I get stupid and leave it on the top of a gas pump somewhere. The spare is a standard NAPA item, functionally equivalent but a bit different in appearance - raised "wings" for your thumbs rather than the protruding side thumb wings; it's a perfect fit. If you want the NAPA number I believe I still have the box.

Thanks for the offer, Owen. We have a NAPA in the next town over from me. I'll try them first.

Once we get the NAPA part number. Please put in the the Part X-Ref here on the website so we can keep a record of it and help the next guy out.

Thanks!

Functional equivalent to OEM is a Stant G-37 for 1956, I assume 1955 is the same. I've got a couple of extras (used); if you want one send me a PM with your mailing address.
