I just came across an article from 2003 about
using 1972 Ford 1/2 ton spindles on the 55\56
Packard. I was written by WCraigH, as far as I
could tell all the links were ended and the
article was the only entry.
http://forums.aaca.org/topic/38756-another-front-disc-brake-conversion/?hl=%2Bdisc+%2Bbrake+%2Bconversion

Does anyone remember this article. was any further
writings done regarding this.

Craig is a frequent poster here and will probably see your question and provide more details. If not, you might find out more information on his sitehttp://www.1956packardpanther.com I believe the brakes are covered in his special projects part of his Panther project listing.

hello
Well it's been some time since I posted (cheap brakes)
Graig has not been on or replied to my posting.
I am going forward with the switch to Disc brakes
using the method Paul had done. That is swapping
out the spindle\steering knuckle from a F100\F150
from later 70's. the bore size for the Packard king pin
is .866, the Ford is .85xx so a honing should bring
it up to the Packard size.
I am sure some machining of the Ford spindle will need
to be done, other then the king Pin.
I am also going to a newer M\C and or powerboost.
Wilwood has a manual MC with about 1200 psi
A 7" dual diaphragm will also be used.
what is funny for me, living in LA county, not one
wreaking yard showed a F100\150 for those years.
and I really don't want to go searching then have
to pull the part myself.
an out of state yard has both left and right
with everything attached for $45.00 each.. seems like
a good deal

I was always taught that king pin bushings should not be honed but reamed and burnished. Is this what you meant?

Craig, nice to hear from you.
I've looked at your site a few times.
I liked the F100\150 swap that Paul did, I did
not see much info on it except when he said it's not
a bolt in. As I posted I bought a set "pulled"
which are being shipped to me
On the other hand his new MC\booster is not
what I am thinking of.

Correct and I'm fairly certain the Packard shop manual is quite specific in regard to this. Honing is to be avoided on soft metals like bronze bushings. As you will see from the attached the Packard pin shared the same diameter as many other vehicles so the correctly-sized reamer is easily found.

Paul used Early 1970s Lincoln because he had one (a whole parts car). IMO, if an owner is going to mount an Booster/MC up high on the firewall, then buy a new one, not "pic-a-part" one that is 40YO.

But, to each his own. The main point is get rid of the BTV.

hi Craig
I agree, use new parts if possible
Paul did not give much info on the disc brake swap.
I have not seen any posts from him lately.

to the guys that brought up the reaming instead of
honing.
I am only honing the steering knuckle. I am not
touching the steering knuckle support, which is were
the busing and the bearings are.
The F150 king pin is .8593 as you know the Packard is
.866 unless my info is wrong.
I have not taken the king pins out yet and have no
idea if there is a bushing in the steering knuckle
my Service manual does not show or mention one.

on another subject, in the parts x ref I see no
mention of lower control are bushings, any reason
why not?
On the upper control arm bushings IC where the Ford
D3AZ-3068 is indicated as a usable part, has anyone
installed them?

I always appreciate constructive info
I'd like to hear from anyone else who has done the
F150 steering knuckle swap
or anyone who has done the MC\booster upgrade...
Best
