In the garage today it occurred to me that my engine stand I've used for V8s may not work or be safe with the straight eight engine. What do most people use for these engines?

Packard's engine stand mounted the engine a bit higher than the side bolts Ross uses in the second link above so it is more balanced when you want to turn it upside down. You could do similar by making the plate taller to drop the engine down. Packard's stand also had some extra supports which extended to the other side and hooked or clamped in the valve chamber openings.

I made a similar adapter to use a regular stand by using a length of 1/2" plate about 4 inches longer than the engine. It was welded in a tee shape with a short length dropping down to bolt to the side holes Ross' stand shows. Had a short pipe welded on to fit the engine stand rotation hole. The extra side clamps were modified J bolts typically used when pouring concrete foundations..

Downside to the factory type and mine is you cannot bolt all the accessories on like you can with Ross's until it is off the stand. Packard had a separate 4 wheel dolly or cart like stand the engine could be transferred to after assy which could be used for installing components or for roll around storage.

Yep, we had both the stand and the cart. The stand was a monster of cast iron. The cart, I recall, had a notch cut out of one of the top sections to clear the oil pump. I wonder what happened to them? Thanks for the memory.

I have one that I can sell cheap. It is essentially two of the v8 style bolted together end to end. It works well. I'm in Missouri. I also have several straight engines and parts that I can sell at a low price. PM me if you are interested.
