I don't know how long the bulb is or what size nut is on the thermometer you are installing in that location but it does need to have some of the bulb actually in the circulating fluid. It the sensor is all up inside that extension the fluid will sense more the conduction from the heat of the head iron instead of the circulating coolant.

There are different lengths and different size extensions or adapters available. Here is an example of one for a 3/8M NPT to 3/8F NPT which is more the length I was expecting is needed for that application. Just as important is not to get one too short that the bulb is too far into the head and bottoms out. It should allow some of the bulb to extend down into the coolant but that particular one may not fit the nut on your thermometer.

If you have any pipe threading tools, you might be able to shorten and rethread the one you have.

I had one like you linked to and tried that a long time ago. It is not tall enough and the bulb bottoms out in the head.

The bulb sticks out of the one I have on there now about 1/4 in. It wasn't tight around the bulb and fluid will get up in there, but I doubt it will flow.

I'll leave it as is. Especially with as much fluid was pouring out and the difficulty holding my thumb over the hole while I tightened it in.

earlier work before a dramatic weekend, here is that progress.

got back to work last night wraping window mouldings.


here are the different combos i have on the headlights and i fixed the slats in the hood with a broken vent that DAF sent me. i broke the slats off that one and glued them to mine. looks good enough for now, better then huge holes.

i'm doing about one window frame a night, such tedious work.

I thought the smaller frames would be easier, boy was i wrong. these smaller windows change direction as you go around with the vinyl, which meant the vinyl kept getting off track. PITA! so i had to make several seams all the way around and do the wrap in sections. but you can hardly tell.

took the car out for some fun with the family last weekend. Had several photo ops.

stopped by the old Packard Dealership on W 7th in Fort Worth.

24 year return trip to my Grandfather.

and a recreation of a photo my Grandfather took at the Botanical Gardens.

the car drove well, but i do have some observations/questions.

the car tends to want to stumble around and loose power every so often. I turn on the electric fuel pump and the problem goes away. The mechanical fuel pump was rebuilt as you guys know. the only thing i can think of is vapor lock. turn on the electric fuel pump, problem resolves, turn off fuel pump. cycle will repeat after several minutes pass. seems to happen more at highway speeds 50-60 mph. in the city driving is fine, no stumbling.

car ran 180 while moving on an 80 degree day. let it sit too long and the temp will go up, but i take it with a grain of salt considering the OEM doesn't work right and the aftermarket is mounted in a less than accurate way.

Some nice photos there and the car is looking good.

I am curious how the gas line routes in your 37 before it reaches the pump and where you have your electric mounted.

If the electric is near the tank and pushing the gas forward that leads credence to many who have suggested the problem of vapor lock develops in the line when it is at low pressure and before it reaches the suction of the pump. In that routing, does the line come close to the exhaust at any spot that could increase temp enough to make it want to "boil"? Is there insulation on any of the run now?

If the electric is near the mechanical pump and still has to pull a long distance, that kind of lessens the low side theory and leans more toward something in the mechanical side not quite to spec.

electric pump is closer to the gas tank and mounted to the frame right in front of the rear axle area. i didn't think about the gas line going down the frame with relation to the exhaust. there is not heat protection on that part. and i'm using a stainless braided rubber line from pump to carb and angled away from the manifolds and held to the splash pan.

almost positive its vapor lock. within about 5 seconds of turning on the electric pump the problem goes away and i just turn the pump off so it isn't shoving pressure against the diaphram in the mechanical pump. its only slightly annoying, but at least the fix is easy with a switch under the dash.

I have the same problem of the gas stumbling on my cars. Turning on the electric fuel pumps solves the problem. On cooler days, I don't need the electric fuel pump. On hotter days, even in Phoenix, AZ (+100F) I use the electric fuel pump.
