Elefant has illustrated the correct assembly. Also brought to your attention earlier by HH56 in your thread "Where is the CTS in my 53 Clipper", perhaps you missed taking note of it back then.

Brenda,

You have an army of long experienced Packard owners trying to help you, probably over 250 years experience total. Why do you ask if someone is sure if the thermostat is to be located where we say it should be?? Perhaps this is why you are having so much difficulty.

The smaller thermostat that I believe is the correct size that i passed on to buy the one on the car is two inches according to Napa. The one that was on there resting on the cylinder head just covers the hole. Someone said I could get a metal O ring slightly larger than the small thermostat and use that instead of the snap ring that Packard has. Your thoughts. It seems easier to buy today. I'm not near the car now to measure the outside of housing. I'm on the way to a parts store.

He said that there are metal collapsible O rings that should do the job, I'll see.

Call Kanter's ask for the Packard parts dept they will have exactly what you need...thermostat,snap ring, and a replacement thermostat housing if needed. If the housing is needed then you get a modern updated housing, thermostat and gasket...no snap ring needed.
Hope this helps.

when I took out the coolant to change the thermostat I saved it to pour back in. When I poured it back in I had about 3-4 qts more in the container even after driving the car. Why can this be??
