Upper right dash knob (above heater controls) on my Custom Super Clipper is an unused knob labelled "Fresh Air". Any idea what it was used for? The only fresh air is cowl vent that I am aware of. Anyone have that knob with different inscription?

The FRESH AIR kit was an option. The knob attaches to a cable which controls a flapper valve on the firewall and allows fresh air to enter behind the heater or defrost/footwarmer unit and circulate thru the heater into the car. There is a cloth duct which connects the valve assy to another opening near the radiator. The kit allows clean air in front of the car to pass thru without picking up engine fumes and was a precursor to the ducted built in ventilation system adopted starting with the fresh air vents and integrated heaters from the 22nd series onward.

That upper right position could have several different knobs depending on options installed and owner preferences. There was limited space in the Clipper dash. Essential switches and dedicated spots (headlight and instrument sw, cigar and map light) left 4 somewhat flexible spaces. Packard did try to standardize switch locations but If the car was heavily optioned some easy to move heater and light controls could be installed below the dash similar to prewar conventional body models. That opened space in the dash for preferred items or less movable controls such as the mechanical fresh air cable.

Here is a bit from the accessory manual and a couple of photos taken by Mike S. of the fresh air components on his car. He is missing the cloth duct.
