Nothing will fly apart. Check the part number in the book--I don't know off the top of my head and don't have any sitting around loose.

Here are samples.

The hole and dimple.

These are stated 55.56. Once you have them out you can see if they are the same. 51-56.

I hope to replace the valves this week. And of course when I do, I'm going to replace the fluid using Type F. I've looked, but can't seem to find how quarts I should have on hand when I do. Does someone out there know or willing to offer a WAG?

I would suggest having a dozen qts on hand. A complete fill will take almost 12 qts but even after draining the converter there will still be some fluid in the cooler lines, valve body, and various pistons. Depending on how long it drained you may get by with slightly less.

You cannot dump the fluid in all at once though since the converter needs to fill so here are the instructions. You may also find it easier to pull the carpet back and remove the plate over the vent plug so you can pour in from the top. Depending on whether the cap over the vent plug has been removed before it can be a matter of pulling out the screen mesh or removing the vent entirely.

There was a bulletin to remove the converter check valve on the early units. If that bulletin was done the converter will drain back fast enough that it will throw off the true dipstick reading when you do the final check if you wait much longer than a minute to check the dipstick after the engine stops.

"Trick Shift" is the brand name for B&M's automatic transmission fluid. It's been around for some years and is used by quite a few Ultramatic and Twin Ultramatic users. It's been suggested that its additive package may contain a rosin-type component to give it the "stickiness" that is claimed to be it's advantage over conventional fluids. From my own experience with it, it can provide temporary relief for groaning direct drive clutch engagement.
