Mike,

I too am surprised at this turn in the road, have also been following along on your journey, but pleased the next owners will have your continued support.

Regarding "your" '53 Clipper Deluxe Club Sedan could you update the Registry entry to reflect the change in ownership?

You also said "There is another Packard in my family that I will be soon taking over. It is pretty much the only car that I considered giving up the clipper for. It is a 1953 Caribbean that my uncle has had since 1973. (before I was born!) It's in the registry, and I will start a blog for that car." However I can't see this Caribbean in the Registry, can you point me in the right direction to it please? Or has my eyesight failed to such an extent that I now need a stick and a dog?

Mike,

I've now read your new blog for the Caribbean and see this:

Quote:
....It is still in the US, and looks like it will take a few months to get over to me in Germany. I've known this car since I was young, and am honored that I have the chance to be it's caretaker now. It is a 1953 Caribbean in Matador Maroon.....

Think I still need you to point me in the right direction.

How do I update the Clipper's registry entry? I can update my personal info, but can't figure out how to update the clipper registr (which should be associated with my user id)
It's past my bed time....

Mike,

Thought the '53 Caribbean you provided the link for was the one. Just wanted to make sure before I updated the entry.

Updating the Registry entry isn't associated with your personal info, instead it's through the entry itself. Scroll down to the bottom left of the Registry entry itself(see screenshot) click onto the "Make Changes" field and go from there. After your changes make sure you click on the "Save Changes" button!

OK, I updated the registry.
I can't stop making things better on the clipper. A while back I bought some headlight trim rings from longjohn. They were missing the little clip -like almost all do, but I was able to secure the clip from my old ring by drilling (very carefully) 2 holes and attaching the clip with small screws. I'll do the driver side soon. I think Alex -the new owner- will want to freshen up the chrome in general on the car....We will see if that means re-chroming or just getting better used chrome parts.

I'll continue this in "my" or this blog since this transmission was originally from the clipper. I upgraded the clipper to an OD trans years ago, and had this transmission sitting around. I always wanted to take it apart and see how it all works, and hopefully put it back together someday. I would like to rebuild this trans as a back-up, and to learn how it is done. I'm hoping it just needs bearings and gaskets, perhaps synchros and not expensive gears.
There was about 1/32 wiggle room of the clutch input shaft, and it started to jump out of high gear a few times going downhill, and when I opened it up, you could see the 2-3 selector fingers were worn down. I think 1/2 inch width is the original size, and theses were worn down to 3/8 at the worst part. I read the manual, and started taking it apart. First order was remove the cover, then drive out the coutershaft. I just used a 3/8 extension and a rubber hammer and out it came! Steps 1 and 2 were pretty easy.

Posting in steps here to put text in between the pictures, and so I don't loose a bunch of typing... The shaft came out pretty easy without too much effort. I was suprised it was not tighter. As you can see, this tab is on the front (engine side) of the counter shaft.

Watching with interest as I have two R11 overdrive transmissions to combine into one good one. Gaskets, though, are apparently not to be found so I'll have to put together a "kit" of sorts once I get them apart and I'm hoping that your photos will continue to give insights! (Maybe if any of yours come out intact I can borrow them to have patterns made.)

When the counter shaft is driven out, the counter shaft falls down into the bottom of the trans housing, and you can take out the clutch shaft. Remove the 6 screws on the front cover, then remove the big snap ring that is the bearing retainer. Note the hook for the throw out bearing return spring is on the pass side of the trans. After the big ring is removed you can wiggle out the clutch shaft.
The last picture shows the clutch shaft with the bearing retaining clips, and a needle bearing that goes in the back of the clutch shaft.

I noticed that Kanter sells a kit for about 200$ with gaskets and bearings. I might try that for wear parts and gaskets, unless I find a better source.

After the clutch shaft is out, you can remove the 5 bolts holding the tailshaft onto the transmission body. Of course if there is an OD here, this gets more difficult. When the 5 bolts are out, you can remove the 2/3 selector and the synchro thing(sorry, forgot the word) Between the clutch shaft and the intermediate shaft is a spring of some sort. I guess this preloads the bearings? See picture 10. Wiggle out the tail shaft, and out it comes! All pretty easy so far. And FUN!
