Last post for me tonight. Here a nice picture of the coutershaft and associated parts. I think it is 25 needle bearings at each end. I noticed the the steel washer on the rear side was kind of blue. Is that indication that it was run hard or dry at some point?

Right now, I have no idea how I am supposed to get this retaining ring out of the rear bearing on the tail shaft. Are there plyers to go around a corner? That is stopping me from further dis-assembly. Please chime in if you know how to proceed.
As of now, I will clean and inspect and sort the parts, and try and figure out what is next. Don't expect this to move too fast, but I would like to put this back together eventually.
It would also be nice to replace the snap rings with newer ones that have the holes to put the pliers in. Are there old style plyers that are used to remove these snap rings? Hope I can make some progress again soon, but I am not holding my breath

Yes, there are special tools for removing and installing that type of locking ring. Craftsman, K-D, Snap On, and others. Mine are Craftsman and work well, don't know if they are still available.

test seems ok Kev....
I still am at a loss for what kind of snap ring, or circlip pliers are used to open that type of ring. I have a set of the ones with the little pins at the ends to open rings that have 2 holes in them, and understand that I will need some pliers that are bent 90 degrees to get in there, but still am not sure how the pliers will grab the ring to make it smaller to allow it to come out. Well, this is the mystery that makes this hobby interesting always something to learn
I guess the pliers -If I can find a set- will go under the christmass tree!

I've been successful in getting those types of clips out using a couple long screwdrivers (one to move it inward; the other to work under it) but you have to be careful to not shoot it across the room or, worse, into your face!

Right you are Don. I got 2 rings out from the clutch shaft with a combination of pliers, a screwdriver, a putty knife, and......safety goggles!
Stay safe, and happy tinkering.

I bought a pair of 90deg snap ring pliers, but they keep slipping off. I guess I need some old fashioned ones that don't have the round tips.....

That is the type designed for the rings with holes at the ends and are nearly always round.

Hi all, it's been a while. I left the tail end of the transmission sitting on my work bench for a while, and got up some energy to work on it last night. After cleaning the ring with brake cleaner, and trying a few different screwdrivers I was successfull in removing the ring, and the main driveshaft from the tail section of the transmission.
After removing all the clips, I was able to remove the speedometer drive, and the other bearings with some gentle/medium "love taps" with a rubber mallet.

The only damage that I found was on the bearing surface of the mainshaft. Boxed in with yellow, you can see how that bearing surface is starting to go bad....Since this is more of a "practice rebuild" transmission, I don't think I will spend the money for a new main driveshaft here. I may see if I can have a machine shop weld that up, and re-surface it though.
If I put new bearings, synchro rings and gaskets in this transmission, I think it should still be ok for one season of use as a temporary replacement for the OD transmission in the clipper or carib.

It will still be a few weeks/months before I get a rebuild kit for this over here, but I would expect with freezing the shafts and heating the bearings, they would be pretty easy to press on.

I also hope I can get new circlips in the "modern style" with the holes that I can grab with the pliers I have, and not these old fashioned ones...

I'm only 1/2 way done, but so far it is an interesting, and not imposible task.
