'Brass nuts to fasten the manifolds to the engine block'

John, I'm curious - why brass nuts?? Mine were brass when I took the manifolds off my car and I replaced with same. I thought it odd at the time that they were brass, but figured there must be a reason and reused the originals. Chris.

Brass nuts are used to prevent seizing to steel studs.

JT120 beat me to the reply. It is a long-term solution to nuts seizing on the studs. Many have used steel nuts with good results. Still, brass is a better way to go.

Update on the 282 manifold. Finally got the motor in and running. There are no leaks in the manifold gaskets and everything sounds and looks good. Hoping to drive it by May for a better test. Thanks for all the advice even though I did not follow all of it. :-D :thanks:

Good to hear that it's running but note that if you used extra gaskets to fill the space, you can expect an exhaust leak sooner or later! A single compressed gasket makes a good seal but stacked gaskets do not. Not really a problem in itself but keep an ear open for it so as to not have any damage if left unheeded. It may be subtle at first but will get more noticeable as it's driven, especially under load such as accelerating or up hills.

I agree with Don, and even when I got my manifolds to 'agree' and be perfectly on one plane, I still had to 'chase' the manifold nuts for some time, as the heat cycles create enough 'movement' of the whole assembly as to require several re-torques. I can only imagine stacked gaskets would exacerbate that issue. Chris.
