Perhaps I'm not being clear, or maybe some of the comments have muddied what's going on here (more than likely the case).

The cars are not being sold as "shells." There are some extra parts, which would be sold separately if the cars are sold separately. All the parts and all the cars are available as one lot, or individually. It appears to me that the '38 Club Sedan is about the only car that is, for the most part, still put together.

The Club Sedan definitely looks like it would be the easiest (but still not a cake walk) to restore. The Town Cars definitely deserve saving, but when all the work is completed, whoever buys them will have a lot more invested in them than the current market (and likely future market) will bear.

I don't want to join the negative crowd, but that son better adjust those prices way down or he'll be in a nursing home and still be trying to sell them. As much work as those cars need, they are extremely expensive projects. We've recently seen it with that big warehouse full of derelict Packards and Pierce-Arrows up in the New York area - it doesn't pay to hoard these cars and just keep gathering up as many as you can.

He'd have been better off buying one, restoring it or getting as close to restoring it as possible, and you never disassemble a car until you are READY to start the restoration start-to-finish.

IMHO the R of ROI does not have to be a '$'.
Bear with me a true story....

Back in 1968 I was shocked when my mailman in Damascus, MD bought a $10,000 Winnebago motor home.
I asked him:"How can you justify spending that kind of money on something you use just a couple times a year?"
He replied:"When you go out to dinner, do you go to SAVE MONEY?..No...it's called STYLE OF LIVING!
It's simply HOW you enjoy spending your money!
You don't try to justify everything.
Talk to a boat owner about ROI!"

Well said. It pretty much goes without saying that restoring ANYTHING will cost more than the "after" value. We don't do it for the money, we do it for our hobby.

I'll say it again, the gentleman only took apart ONE car. He bought the other cars already taken apart. The '38 was bought as a parts car, and is not taken apart.

Jack Nethercutt used to say - I make my money at Merle Norman and I spend my money on cars.

Think about that.

West, it’s a neat looking batch of cars, and sorry for all the negative comments, and advice to people who are past taking it that this thread has generated!

These are beyond my skill level, and I don’t have the time right now for such a Herculean undertaking, but I hope they find a new home!

Attached picture is a 1931 840 that was pulled out of a swamp in 1960 and taken to Bud Cornhoff in New Jersey for restoration. The owner, John Cavalero searched high and low for a dual cowl car and this car was all he could find. That was in the days before fakes were being made. It was a long time before there was a more expensive Packard restoration than that car.

So all those cars need are parts and a good restorer, but presentation is 9/10's of the truth.

I prefer not to be involved in the judging scene, but have always wondered how judges
consider grungy old data plates vs shiny new reproductions?!?!?!

That is perhaps a question for its own thread, but in the eyes of buyers spending top dollar for a very desirable and rare body style, the original data plate is priceless.

It also depends on the type of show and judging. I've been a judge at many, and I for one would not knock any car with a grungy original data tag.

Although I have judged in local NorCal PAC meets, I can probably answer that better and more to the point as a DMV licensed VIN verifier. If I see a brand new dataplate, it is an automatic referral to the CHP (California Highway Patrol) UNLESS the original is also presented to me in readable condition and if nothing was drilled or cut to remove it. For legal purposes, a new dataplate sets off all sorts of red flags and should also do so with judges but probably does not.
