Thank You, Ross. You are a man of few words.

What do I use to mount the firewall pad? I seem to recall some metal "push pins" when I removed the old one. I am sure I can come up with something but I don't want to use a hole that is needed for something else later on like the plenum.

Right after I get the painting down I want to mount the firewall pad and the dashboard.

sorry for the photo quality, but mine is held in by plastic push pins
1/4 x 1-1/2-1-3/4 inches in length. the one pictured is broken, so I do need to replace some of mine too.

hole locations are circled in orange, hope this helps, as I haven't pulled the pad yet I don't know what else might hold the pad in. I assume something do do with the plenum

Yes, that is what I needed.
I know the plenum will bolt through the pad and into the firewall. WIth this info I will be able to figure out the rest of it.

Thank you

This folks is what $950 worth of paint and clear coat looks like.

Blew my budget for the next few months.

I finally laid some paint down this week.
I started with the hood and it came out better than I expected the first time. It's not bad for having youtube over-confidence.

I was hoping to avoid buffing but there is just too much dust in my shop. Will need to wet sand and buff it out. The trunk is next, then the fenders to practice the two-tone. Then I will move to the roof and then the rest of the body.

Congratulations looks real nice.

When you do your color sanding use a little Dawn in the water allowing the paper to soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Try starting with 1000 grit, but depending on you degree of orange peel you may want to use 800. USE a sanding block and be very careful at the curved areas as it is easy to blow through the clear coat. After the 1000 go to 2000 then 3000.

Most people stop at 2000 but using 3000 makes for a very easy buffing job. I then buff it out using 3M Stuff.

I would usually shot 3 to 4 coats of clear. If you only did 2, you may want to consider a light sanding with 1000 and then shooting 2 more coat. Just be careful on the curves and take your time.

Good Luck

Thank you, Marty.

That is very helpful information.
I will sand and do 2 more coats for clear as you suggested and I did not know about soaking the sandpaper ahead of time.

There is some orange peel (as you can probably see) but I knew the wet sanding and buffing would take care of that as well.

Looks great Stewart! Way to go for it. I'm terrified to paint. I watch a ton of Youtube videos on it, but I'm just not very comfortable with it yet.

Marty, great information. Thanks for posting that. I'll have to file that away for future reference.

Kevin

I was also really nervous about this. About a year ago I found a Youtube channel called PaintSociety. His tag one is "Don't over-think it. It's just paint".
That mindset alone helped me overcome my fears.

I'll put down some basecoat. If it sucks I'll stop there, sand it out and fix it.

I am not good enough to paint the whole car at once that is why I am doing it in pieces. I can find my mistakes and fix them easier that way. It will take me longer but after 9 years what's another month or two.
