That looks to be the first version snubber and is detailed in this service letter in the article entitled clutch chatter 1600-1601. You can check the service index in the 37-42 range and then clutch category for other articles on this snubber as well as info on a retro fit to a later improved snubber because of cases where the rubber separated from the metal on the first version.

Yes the newer version is a rod with rubber grommets on each end.

I picked up an origial style flat one from Steele Rubber.

Note : this unit is supposed to have a bit of slide to the bolt holes based on original installation.

Note the wear pattern on the washer and flat steel.

There is a "lip" on the washer that allows the snubber to be tightly bolted in but due to the limited contact area it allows the snubber to move in relation to the teansmission / engine movement.

If you do not have the washers let me know,

There are GM Seat mounts that are a little thicker rewuiring a longer stud that I used on my installation that I can take a picture and post.

I believe there are actually 3 versions. The first flat one, the improved second type was an assy that almost looks like two tie rod ends connected together by an adjustable turnbuckle style link and the third postwar version is a very simple type which is just a straight length of rod with two rubber grommets on each end that get compressed slightly on either side of a hole in the mounting brackets.

IIRC, Flackmaster made a few repro's and beefed up a weak spot on the improved second version snubber but no idea if those are still an option.

No photos to offer but it mounts between the frame X point behind the transmission and a point on the bottom rear end of the transmission. Purpose is to help control excessive fore-aft motion of the engine.

Your first version is shown via an illustration on the third page in the service letter linked above in post #3. You can see the bolt and washer arrangement including the large hole space in the snubber ends to allow for a small amount of sliding as Larry mentions in post #6.

Second version is illustrated on the second page in this service letter.

Third version was only used on postwar cars.

I have one of the second version types available but after recent work on my shop, I’m not sure where it is and won’t have time to look for it before closing up the chop in the next couple days.
