I was reading "The Packard 1942 - 1962 Nathaniel T. Dawes" the other day which contains the statements reproduced below. That sort of information in a reference type publication, which one would expect to be authoritative, certainly doesn't help to keep us on the straight and narrow!

That book is completely wrong. For one, the 282 is shorter than the 288 by almost 2", which means that the head, manifolds, cam, crank, block, and oil pan, won't interchange with the 1948 288.

Inspired off of the 282, yeah, I'll go along with that. The 282 becoming the 288 with just a simple bore and stroke rework? I don't think so.

That's like saying the 396 Chevy big block is a reworked 409 Chevy big block, ain't happening.

Documnentation of ANY type, from ANY source, from ANY time period is REFERENCE material ONLY and should not be considered the last word on what was physically produced in production for ANY Mass produced item. And that's that.
