This was in the "Recent Photos" sidebar, and I couldn't help myself. I've seen better pics of this monstrosity, but it gives you an idea. I remember when they were selling them in various car mags. I'm still aghast.

What were they thinking?

Actually, I quite like the Grill.

There is a reason Dreisbach and sons Cadillac is no longer in business. This is one of the reasons. Although it made a standard Cadillac look good if parked next to one of these abortions.

No doubt about it, this monstrosity is a pimp-mobile!

I kind of wonder if it was legally called a "Packard." I bet there was an asterisk* somewhere. And the Caddy it's based on is that Seville with the short deck, wasn't it?

*Maybe something like: "Not responsible for authenticity or resale value, if any."

I don't want to be mean, but this thing is obviously NOT a labor of love. It's a lousy trick if you ask me. Probably trying to build showroom traffic:
"Step right up ladies and gents! Come and see the freak car! It's real! Drive it if you dare!"

Now I guess I am getting mean.

It is a Bayliff, not a Dreisbach and Sons. That was the dealership that distributed them. Not the builder. It is built from a 1980 Sedan DeVille, not a Seville.

And yes, not only did Bayliff have the right to use the name, they purchased and owned the Packard name.

I own one of these and get many compliments when I drive it.
On the ownership of the Packard name, The Packard Club claims to own it, the guy in Arizona who was going to build a new Packard claimed he owned it, not I see someone says Bayliff owns it.

In my opinion it is in the public domain by now so nobody owns it an everybody can use it. Nobody has sued anybody and won but there has been a lot of noise. Time will tell.

Anyone know how many have been built / price?

I believe that's the Gullickson prototype. Only 1 made that I know of, it was on view in Cleveland during the 1999 Packard Centennial in Warren OH. The story of the car is well known and has been written about quite a bit, most recently in an issue of PAC's publication which covered all the attempts to revive the Packard vehicle.

The Gullickson car, engineering drawings, tooling etc. were up for auction on eBay not too long ago. It did have a V-12, a conversion of some helicopter or aircraft engine as I recall. There's more to the story, probably best left unsaid.
