Asking this of any longtime senior owners who really know what Packard, the industry, Zeus, Minerva, Mr. and Mrs. America and all the ships at sea preferred, assuming there was a "right" way.

On both old body style 1941-42 One-Sixty/One Eighty, and their 1942-47 Clipper counterparts, all these having two bulbs in each tail light housing, which went on top, the single element turn signal bulb, or the dual-filament tail and brake light bulb?

Please, only respond if you know what Packard/the industry preferred, not however your bulbs happen to be plugged in.

Sure now, 'tis a wee matter, in the scheme of things. But our fine cars are a collection of details.

100% sure the top lense (dome) on the 160-180 is the turn signal and 99.9% sure the top bulb on the Clipper is the turn signal.

I believe this is still the industry practice as well. That is, the next time I get one I'm sure on dual filament tailights the high candle power filament is tabbed to be on top. And on vertical dual bulb assemblies the top lense is the turn signal.

There is probably an SAE or DOT standard for this, but you have to pay for the SAE stuff.

And Packard literature agrees with that placement the following year.

The 22nd series has essentially the same turn signal system and tail light design as the Clipper. The 48 owners manual shows the tail light with the top half of lens in a lighter shade or "illuminated" when discussing turn signal operation.
