That 5547-1833 is the number. There were no VIN's as such back then as we know them today. Your number would decode as 55= 55th series, 47=hardtop in Super series, 1833= the 832nd Super hardtop built since the numbering started at 1001 in 55. The other two items on the tag are the paint code and upholstery types in the car as it left the factory. Both of those can be looked up in various other publications on site.

There is one other number that would be appreciated if you would like to share. The large stamped number above the heater box on firewall is the body ID or as it is called more commonly, the thief proof number. The only permanent number on the car and the one number where there is no records known to exist. All those factory records seem to have been destroyed or vanished. One of our members has managed to collect a substantial database of those numbers on known cars and am sure would appreciate yours as well.

AUTOKING, what number is on you engine? As HH56 pointed out earlier it is easy to find on the front of the engine on the top near the oil fill pipe. It should match the number on the plate in the door opening that you found. To assist you in finding your number, I have posted a photo of my engine number.

If it matches you have the original engine. The 320 cu. in., 225 b.h.p. Super and Deluxe Clippers were painted a red-like color, the 352 cu. in. engine was painted an ivory color. Also the 320s were Auto Lite equipped and the 352s came with Delco Remy electrical equipment.

There is a wealth of information on this site (manuals, model information, photos, discussion forum, etc.) and many here are expert in the 55-56 cars.

Welcome, and send us some photos of your new find, sounds like a good one.

Because the VN matches the engine number, that means you have the original motor in the car. Which is a good thing.

AUTOKING, Good news on the matching numbers. No photo with your post. You need to push the ATTACH FILE button after you BROWSE and get the photo. We are all eager to see your find. Thanks.

Kev, I still think this needs to be moved to the V-8 section.
