I know this has been answered before, - I will have my 48 Deluxe serviced soon. What oil ( Type & weight ) do you recommend for the engine, transmission, overdrive, and differential. Thanks

You will get a lot of answers on this one. We all have our preferences but I would start with the owners manual recommendations and see what can cross over to todays modern lubricants. I am sure a lot of folks will chime in with specifics but you need a starting point on what the factory required.

Look at Packardclub.org-there is a lub spec sheet. At least that is a beginning. Always remember any oil is better than no oil

I have Shell Rotella "15w-40" in my '52, But that is because my engine is fitted with an oil filter. Can't really say how well it does in my packard, since I haven't driven it yet. You could get away with a straight weight. Just my

Plenty of choices for gear oil for the trans and OD; to make matters simple you can use same lube most of us use for the differential, SAE85-140 GL-5 extreme pressure gear oil.

I'm getting quite confused. According to the BW R11 OD manual it says that the most satisfactory lube for normal use is SAE 40 engine oil. Not EP and (in bold) Under no circumstances must a lube of the hypoid axle type be used in the OD.

I've been using 40 wt ND oil in the my R11 for the last 4 yrs.
What gives?

It looks like Packard recommended straight 80 or 90 SAE mineral gear oil. Nothing mentioned about EP.

The BW recommendation is very specific about not using EP isn't it. Wonder if the formulations have substantially changed since the recommendation was made and today's stuff is not prone to the maladies they mention.

Interesting also that they acknowledge the common oil passages and oil being shared with trans. Wonder how many mfgs used 40 or 50 wt engine oil in the trans.

BW does mention a couple of lines later that SAE 80 or 90 gear oil is satisfactory in the OD so perhaps Packard just kept everything simple.
